Updated: Nov 12, 2018

Here are some things that we've done this week and some upcoming info! Don't forget to sign up for conferences.

Writing: This week we dove deeper into personal narratives and thought about what really inspires us by creating heart maps and webs. They started flash drafts of their writing and shared with partners. Today, we wrote our first letter to our pen pals at Doss elementary. They checked their letters for correct punctuations, capitalization, and grammar, and made sure their writing had all the elements of a great letter.

Reading: We focused on how readers stop, think, and jot down their thinking about a book.

Math: More with pictographs, bar graphs, and dot plots. We graphed a dot plot for the vowels in our names, measured spaghetti noodles and graphed the frequency or lengths, and rolled dice and made a table to match.

Science: Began our states of matter unit! They rotated through 5 stations of different physical properties of matter to explore mass, texture, temperature, magnetism, and float/sink.

Social Studies: We discussed voting, elections, and the constitution. We created a class constitution centered around kindness that was modeled on the US constitution.

Today during enrichment time, (ESLOT) we used the engineering design cycle to build a “beanstalk” out of 10 pipe cleaners. The challenge was to see who could design and build the tallest.

What’s coming up next:

Writing: More on personal narrative! We will focus in on one idea and begin writing the introduction to drafts.

Reading: Focus on stamina and comprehension check.

Math: We will wrap up our unit on Summarizing and Analyzing Data and will probably take the DCA on Wednesday or Thursday this week.

Science: Continue unit on classifying matter

Social studies: Focus on voting and how it has changed from past to present
