What an awesome week of celebrating diversity at Elsa England! International Children’s week was such a great week of learning, researching, and celebrating. We ended the week with an assembly!
Writing and reading- We had the chance to listen to a presentation on China and Hong Kong for ICW. Then, students researched China and Hong Kong and used the research to create google drawings that showcased what they learned. This was a great way to kick off our unit on reading non-fiction texts and expository writing!
Math- This week we focused on the twos, fours, and eights multiplication facts. Students noticed lots of patterns throughout the lessons such as doubling for twos facts, doubling and doubling again for 4’s facts, and double double double for 8’s facts! Rather than simply memorizing facts, third grade pushes students to start noticing patterns and continue with deep understanding of multiplication. The memorizing will come naturally as we continue!
Science- We wrapped up our unit on forms of energy by designing a robot with all 5 forms of energy. We also finally built the solar ovens!
Social studies- We began our PBL (project based learning or legacy project) on conservation by watching a video and writing a response. We will continue to incorporate PBL into all subject areas, build our knowledge on conservation, do research, and come up with some solutions!
Coming up next:
Writing- Expository writing and spelling quiz (daily grade) over all spelling words so far. Here is this week’s spelling.
Reading- Non fiction and text features.
Math- We will wrap up unit 3 and take the DCA.
Science- We will test out our solar ovens and begin out unit on Earth’s forces.
Social studies- We will study some environmental heroes and continue with our conservation PBL.
