Wow, this week has flown by! How have we already been in school for 3 weeks?!

Reading: This week we focused on stamina and comprehension. They discussed their books with a partner and jotted down thinking in their reading journal. Today, we talked about reading with expression and keeping your mind on during reading. We also had our Bluebonnet book kickoff lesson where we learned about how the Bluebonnet books and quizzes work, and the rewards and prizes for reading them!

Writing: Continued with personal narratives. Students have honed in on an idea and started on their draft. We’ve talked about exploding the moment using detail and descriptive language, elements of good introductions, and using transition words.

Math: Finished up graphing and started unit on addition and subtraction by reviewing rounding and number lines. We graphed how far students can jump, and the frequency of the number of raisins in a mini box. Then, students completed stations where they explored different things (pom poms, pennies, assorted coins, and dice) and made graphs based on different criteria.

Science: We explored temperature and thermometers, and finished up our states of matter stations reflection.

Social studies: We discussed the importance of voting and how it affects our lives. Then, students voted on what they wanted their first class reward to be. The winner was “reading with a flashlight”. So, whenever our class reaches the goal, send a flashlight with them to school so they can flashlight read during reading workshop!

ESLOT: Today we met our kinder buddies! We are with Ms. Lara’s class. Students listened to a read aloud, met their buddies for the first time, and completed a get to know you activity with their buddy.

Coming up next week:

Reading- Discuss visualizing and context clues

Writing- Adding dialogue, emotions, and 5 senses to personal narrative. Introduce a new mentor sentence to model grammar.

Math- Revisiting 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction and Continuing 4-Digit Place Value to 9,999

Science- Finish up unit 1 on matter and take DCA.

Social Studies- We will do some noticing and wondering with primary sources. We will explore the three branches of government.
